The charm of Christmas markets is such that you lose track of time. One can spend endless hours here, munching, sipping, shopping or simply, walking. While wandering in the crowd-packed Christmas market, when that sweet, spicy or tart whiff lures you, brace yourself to binge. Glühwein beckons!!
Star attraction of Nuremberg Christmas Markets
Germans just adore their Glühwein. If you already have been to Nürnberg Christkindlesmarkt, you must be knowing it. People can be seen with wine mugs, huddled around bonfires setup by wine booths, having bratwurst, munching chestnuts, crunching candied nuts, watching live Christmas concerts, window shopping, stall hopping and what not! There are people sipping the hot spiced wine literally everywhere in the market. This isn’t it. Christkindlesmarkt has a new Christmas theme every year, which is embossed on the ceramic wine mugs and the best part is, they can be taken away as keepsake.
The Wine Mug Pfand
The booths serve wine in cute, festive themed wine mugs with colorful motifs on them. When you buy Glühwein, 3 or 4 Euros are charged extra as deposit for the mug. After your drink, when you return the mug at the wine booth, the deposit amount is returned in cash. You have an option to keep the mug and forgo the deposit. What better souvenir than a Christmas themed wine mug!! If you plan to buy wine mugs outside the Christmas market, you have my word, it will be expensive.
St. Lorenz Treff
St. Lorenz Treff is a make-shift wooden bar just around the corner of Lorenz Kirche, in Nuremberg Hauptmarkt. During the Christmas season, it sells Glühwein. It is a cozy little stall with outdoor seating as well as indoor. The exciting part is there is a live, kicking bonfire inside the stall. You can actually sit around and soak up all the warmth. Apart from Glühwein, the stall also serves coffee and few other delicacies.
