June’s Strawberry Moon
When the plants are heavy with ripe, wild strawberries and a full moon is high on the night sky, we know it is time for the “Strawberry Moon”. The last full moon of spring, appearing in the month of June, coincides with the time of strawberry harvest. Hence, the name Strawberry Moon.
One Moon Many Names
Other popular names of the Strawberry Moon are Rose Moon, Hot Moon, Mead Moon and Honey Moon.
Hot Moon
It is called a Hot Moon as it marks the start of summer heat.
Mead Moon
It is also known as Mead Moon as June is the usual time for mowing the meads or meadows.
Rose Moon
This time of the year , Roses bloom in abundance. Hence the full moon during the spring is also called Rose Moon.
Honey Moon
The bees work hard throughout the spring season and collect nectar. By the end of June, all the collected nectar matures into honey and is ready for harvest. Hence, in ancient times, the full moon of June was called Honey Moon.
Poson Poya
Buddhists call this full moon the Poson Poya. Every year in the festival of Poson, Buddhists in Sri Lanka celebrate the arrival of Buddhism in 3rd century BC.
