1# World’s Tallest Statue
There was a lot of hype around the construction of this structure and was subject to mixed opinion from the citizens. At almost 600 feet, the Statue of Unity holds the record. Twice as big as the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Statue of Unity is a larger than life statue of Indian freedom fighter, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or the “Iron Man of India”. It is located in Gujarat facing the Sardar Sarovar dam on River Narmada.
2# World’s First and Only Floating Post Office
Facing the snow clad Himalayas, the floating post office is situated on the Dal Lake, Jammu and Kashmir. Setup during the British rule, this 200 year old post office functions out of a houseboat. Did you know, India has the largest postal network in the world with over 1.5 lakh post offices?!! Making “Dak” or mail possible even in the far flung areas of India.
3# World’s Wettest Inhabited Place
Wondering where in India could it be? Mawsynram in Meghalaya receives the highest average rainfall in the world. A Guinness Book of World Records holder, Mawsynram’s strategic location on the Khasi hills invites the moisture laden winds from the Bay of Bengal to shower some love.
4# World’s Highest Rail Bridge
The Chenab Bridge on River Chenab in Jammu holds the record at 1178 feet above water. This bridge, which is currently not operational, is planned to go live in December 2021.
5# World’s Highest Motorable Road
Easy one, this is. Ladakh Road. At 19300 feet, Ladakh Road is the highest motorable road. Located in Ladakh, this 86 KM long road connects Chisumle and Demchok villages near the Indo-China border. The construction of the road was quite challenging as oxygen availability is only 50% as compared to normal places, unpredictable weather and dipping temperatures,. Carrying heavy machinery to such alarming heights proved to be a bottle neck.
6# World’s Highest Cricket Ground
All the cricket lovers out there, any guesses? At 2444 metres above sea level, Chail cricket ground in Himachal Pradesh holds the record. It was built in 1893 by the Maharaja of Patiala. It is currently used by the Chail Military School.
7# World’s First Hospital Train
The Jeevan Rekha Express or Lifeline Express holds the title. It was started in 1991 as an initiative to make healthcare available to the remote areas of India. Currently stationed in Assam, it has state-of-the-art medical equipment and satisfies all the modern operating room requirements.
8# World’s Highest number of Kabaddi World Cups
Did you know, India has won all the Kabaddi world cups, both in men and women? 10-12 countries participate in the world cup tournament.
9# World’s Largest Producer of Milk
According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, India is the largest producer of Milk in the world with about 22% of the global milk production followed by USA and China. Next time you hear a moo, go hug the cow! By the way, the Indian practice of cow hugging is recognized as therapy in some parts of the world.
10# World’s Largest Vegetarian Population
According to Euromonitor, India has the largest population of vegetarians in the world. Due to personal choices or religious beliefs, about 20-40% of Indians are vegetarians.
